• Derek Irwin, DipIT | President & Founder

    Derek Irwin, a proud Inuk from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, is a graduate of Nunavut Arctic College’s Environmental Technology Program in Iqaluit and the Nunavut Sivuniksavut Inuit Studies program. His passion for science and environmental consulting was shaped by his four years as an aquatic technician, where he gained hands-on experience and discovered the many opportunities within the field.

    Driven by a vision of greater Inuit involvement in environmental work, Derek founded Qaumajuq Environmental Ltd. to provide Inuit with training and meaningful career opportunities in the industry. More than just a consulting company, Qaumajuq Environmental is built on a foundation of local participation and Inuit values, ensuring that Inuit knowledge and leadership are integral to its operations.

  • Bruce Kilgour, Ph.D., Director

    Education: University of Waterloo Aquatic Biology

    Bruce is a fisheries biologist with expertise in aquatic environment monitoring and environmental statistics. He has worked in the industry since 1989. Based on experience gained working across the country for major consulting firms, he founded Kilgour & Associates Ltd. in 2008, to provide ecological consulting services to industry and governments across Canada. Bruce is excited to be participating in the development of Qaumaujuq Environmental Ltd., and expanding its expertise in environmental sciences.

    Bruce has two daughters, and lives with his wife Dianne in Ottawa.

  • Melissa Tillumaluk Irwin | Director

    Experience: Grassroots in employment and training, advancing Inuit priorities with both regional and national Inuit organizations, and is a former educator with Nunavut Sivuniksavut (A unique post secondary program designed to empower Inuit youth).

    During her time at Inuit Broadcasting Corporation, Melissa produced many Inuit language segments for Inuit programming for youth, elders, and children. She also worked as a production trainee on the documentary “Amarok’s Song: Journey to Nunavut” and as a crew member on “The Snow Walker” feature film.

Amber Irwin | Director

Amber has a wealth of experience in community programming and engagement. She previously worked with Nunavut Parks as a Heritage Appreciation Coordinator, fostering connections to the land and culture. Currently, she serves as a Program Coordinator at Ilitaqsiniq, where she helps deliver workplace training and community programs for Nunavummiut. In addition, Amber is a Director at the Rankin Inlet Fitness Centre, demonstrating her commitment to health, wellness, and community leadership. Her ability to organize events and build strong connections has made her a respected leader in her community. 

Charles Hatry, M.Sc. | Director

Charles has formal training in microbiology from McGill and Conservation Biology from Carleton University. Working as a biological consultant since 2011, Charles is currently Director of Resource Development with Kilgour & Associates Ltd. He has experience on a variety of aquatic projects involving fisheries, permitting, fish habitat mapping, species at risk monitoring and inventories as well environmental monitoring of fish communities and fish health.
